The grammar school operated from 1927 to 1983,
when it was a victim of budget cuts and increased competition from private schools.
Its plaster and hardwood were more expensive to maintain than newer concrete block schools.
For a school its architecture was elegant,
using an 1863 bequest "for a school in Summerville."
It has produced two or more generations of community leadership
(both professional and volunteer) --
medical, religious, educational, cultural, business --
in Augusta or in whatever towns the alumni live.
In the current century the building at 2349 William Street has been skillfully repurposed as The SchoolHOUSE Condominiums. Among the residents are two former students, living in their old classrooms. |
